Educational Leadership, Systems and Change was a phenomenal course. In this course I learned about educational models, evolving educational systems and structures and the leadership that implemented the change. As an aspiring educational leader I learned about how important it is for a leader to demonstrate passion backed by research and theory to drive change within your organization. Though change is not easy, it is necessary in order for leaders to effectively lead.
This course encourages school leaders to build relationships within their communities. Historically, schools were located within neighborhoods and teachers, students and families were closely acquainted with school leaders. The cultural competence was a vital part in learning about school community relations. This course challenges the school leader to know about the students they lead and teach. Due to the changing climate of schools and how education is offered, school leaders must develop innovative strategies to build meaningful relationships.
Educational Technology is one of the most important classes I could have taken. Given today’s climate and the instant surge in technology-based teaching, advising and collaboration, selecting this course was a good choice. Through theory and research students will learn how to introduce the idea of technology to students and their families and how to properly implement technology based curriculums in their classrooms. Being acquainted with technology helps to relieve stress, pressure and lack of comfort within families and for students.
Adult Learning (EAD 861) was one of my first two courses at Michigan State University. This course was particularly important to me because I learned vital information about the adult learner from a characteristic lens. As a professional in higher education it is important to understand the life background and prior learning experiences of students I will lead in some capacity. The theories, principles and research covered in this course reshaped my professional approach to working with students.
Teaching in Postsecondary Education was probably one of my favorite courses. In this course I learned how to compose and create a course syllabus and I also learned how to develop strategic lesson plans that are based in theory. This course was vital to my degree path because it was fulfilled requirements for a graduate certificate to teach in higher education.
Concepts and Educational Inquiry was particularly challenging course for me. In this course you will learn about some individuals that were critical to the evolution of education and their careers as educators. I learned how to use inquiry based learning to explore various aspects of the educational process to develop strategies to address issues that arise in education.
Leadership and Organizational development focused on how to lead successfully in diverse businesses and institutions. A great amount of emphasis is placed on understanding the culture and style of various organizations. We applied theory and practice to case studies to help develop our own personal theory and style of leadership. This course inspired me to consider educational consulting.
Training and Professional Development was part of my last three courses at Michigan State University. The literature provided in this course teaches students how to develop training programs based on the organization the programs are needed for. We learn about Human Resource Development and several other key skills.
Budget and Finance in Higher Education is probably the most informing course I am taking during my last semester for my program. This course highlights how policy affects all students. The more interesting aspect is learning how policy makers when biased and culturally blind, they create policies that negatively impact specific margins of students.

Capstone Seminar is my most challenging class because of the heavy technology component. What I love most about this course is that I am challenged to answer questions about my goals and future endeavors. This course helps students to think strategically about their goals, past experiences and future plans. The portfolio that students create is a great marketing tool if utilized after the course. Similar to a curriculum vitae, we expound on our entire journey from start to finish of our master’s program.
