THEN VS. NOW ESSAY

In 2018 I decided to apply to graduate school. My main goal was to be accepted into a program that aligned with my professional interests. As I researched graduate level programs, I found the Master of Arts in Education at Michigan State University. Obtaining this degree was important to me because I wanted to position myself to assist adult learners in reaching their academic goals, I also wanted to be able to help impact and influence school policies and obtain a significant leadership role at a college or university. These are all of the areas I made mention to in my professional goal statement I submitted when I applied to this program. Once accepted into a program my next goal was to make sure I earned at least a 3.5 grade point average each semester or better. This was important to me because I knew I might decide to pursue a doctorate degree and I would need a solid grade point average to do so. My third goal while applying to a graduate program was to also search for employment opportunities for students currently pursuing a master’s degree at MSU or another institution.

From the start of this program until now my goals have not changed. When I applied to the program, I was better able to reflect on what I wanted to do next, what it would take to accomplish my goals, and I was able to reflect on the things I learned from my previous work and college experiences. My grade point average still remains very important to me because I have decided that I want to pursue a doctorate degree. Throughout my program I kept in contact with my professors by asking for feedback on assignments before I submit them for final grades. Since I am currently in the process of researching a doctoral program and by maintaining at least a 3.5 grade point average I feel very confident when making my school selections. Working with adult learners is very much still an important aspect of my career plans. I have always enjoyed seeing students that did not succeed in secondary learning environments enroll in college and graduate. Due to the nature of work I have been able to do in a higher education setting I have kept an interest in understanding school policy, how it impacts student success and best practices in developing strategies to help special populations learn in higher education settings.

I am proud to say that I have accomplished my goal in obtaining a full-time position at Michigan State University in a role that is centered on student success, policy and recruitment. Through this position I will work on various committees to help enhance the outcomes of our students and improve the services offered to our students. This position is also a personal benefit to my next goal in obtaining a doctor in education. Once I complete 2 full time years of employment, I am qualified for tuition discounts and assistance. My next and final goal I had when applying to a master’s program was finding a leadership role in higher education. I am hoping that this position will open doors to other professional roles in a leadership capacity.
